(Brantlinger 230)Indeed, Dracula can be read as a tale of the second type, where the commercial imperialism of Jonathan Harkers firm provides an opening for the Counts entrance into and eventual destruction of British society. In his description of Harkers journey into Transylvania, Stoker foreshadows the racial conflict to come between the Eastern Dracula and the Western protagonists. First, through the writings of Harker Stokers representative of the Westerner encountering the East he contrasts the rampant superstition of the East with the scientific disposition of the West: Every known superstition in the world is gathered into the horseshoe of the Carpathians (Stoker 2). Similarly, when a townswoman offers Harker a crucifix upon learning of his intent to visit Draculas castle, he reacts with skepticism: As an English Churchman, I have been taught to regard such things as in some measure idolatrous (Stoker 5). Coming from the scientifically-advanced British society, he looks upon the Eastern superstitions with condescension.Even Stokers descriptions of the Eastern countryside evoke the supernatural. He points out, through Harker, great masses of greyness, which. . .produced a peculiarly weird and solemn effect and ghost-like clouds which amongst the Carpat hians seem to wind ceaselessly through the valleys (Stoker 8). As the coach crosses a pass through the mountain range, Harker notes, It seemed as though the mountain range had separated two atmospheres, and that now we had got into the thunderous one (Stoker 9). Clearly, his current environment is a far cry from his civilized, ordered fatherland. Indeed, when his train departs late from the station, Harker ethnocentrically remarks, It seems to me that the further east you go the more unpunctual are the trains (Stoker 2). Quite explicitly, Stoker demonstrates through Harker an extreme sense of Western superiority; Harker plays the role of a kind of commercial missionary, traveling eastward in order to bring the advanced business practice of the British to less-civilized areas.Reflecting the British fear of invasion of civilization by the forces of barbarism, as proposed by Brantlinger, the protagonists see Dracula as attempting to reverse the arrow of influence. A prisoner in Dracula s castle, Harker finds his way into the Counts sleeping chamber, where he discovers a bloated, ruddy Dracula fresh from a feeding. Harker reacts with horror:This was the being I was helping to transfer to London, where, perhaps, for centuries to come he might, amongst its teeming millions, satiate his lust for blood, and create a new and ever-widening circle of semi-demons to batten on the helpless. The very thought drove me mad. A terrible desire came upon me to rid the world of such a monster. (Stoker 50)This idea of Dracula spreading the vampire disease throughout bustling London reflects the fin de sià ¨cle fears. . .of racial mingling, crossbreeding, and intermarriage (Showalter 5). The Counts supernatural essence reflects the uncivilized, inferior superstition of his homeland; that he could propagate this unnatural state of being throughout the civilized Western world provides Harker with the impulse to fight back against him.Interestingly, protection of the purity the orde r of the British homeland, as well as British blood, seems to be the sole motivating factor in the protagonists quest to destroy Dracula. By placing a holy communion wafer in forty-nine of the fifty coffins Dracula has brought from Transylvania, thus rendering them uninhabitable for him, the heroes drive him from England. It is worth noting, in fact, that the coffins had been filled with Eastern earth; by infusing them with communion wafers, the heroes effectively remove their Eastern, demoniac quality, in essence anglifying them, leaving Dracula without Eastern refuge in the midst of the West. Lacking his army of viable coffins, Dracula must withdraw from England, attempted invasion thwarted. One would think, though, that the proper course of action for a group of heroes would be to pursue Dracula, that his evil may be removed from the world entirely. After the infected Mina declares under hypnosis that Dracula is returning to the East, however, she asks, Why need we seek him furt her, when he is gone away from us? (Stoker 302). Professor Van Helsing answers that only through Draculas destruction can Minas soul and body be cleansed of the vampire virus. Thus, while the protagonists do chase after the vampire in order to destroy him, they utterly disregard his crimes in the East, caring only of his attempt to perpetrate them in the West, on Western, civilized women. The threat of Dracula, then, is not that he is fundamentally evil (although he and what he represents are both considered evil to the order-seeking protagonists), but only that his evil has begun to encroach on the tranquillity of the West. The heroes seek only a well-ordered society in their own country, and, having driven him back to the East, succeed in that respect; their next task is to pursue him in order to restore a similar order to the Western gender roles as exemplified by Mina.We have seen that Draculas presence in London represents the invasion and subsequent degeneration of the West by less-civilized countries; similarly, the blurred demarcations between the genders in Draculas sphere of influence demonstrate another fin de sià ¨cle British fear, that of the deterioration of traditional gender roles. In her article, Showalter quotes Stoker as writing, The ideal man is entirely or almost entirely masculine and the ideal woman is entirely or almost entirely feminine (Showalter 8). Clearly, he held conservative views of the roles of the sexes, in contrast with the New Woman of the era, who was determined to oppose restrictions and injustices in the political, educational, economic, and sexual realms in order to achieve equality with men (Beckson 129). This paranoia manifests itself in the text of Dracula.In Draculas castle, each gender is suffused with characteristics traditional of the other. Harker, through whose eyes we view this part of the tale, becomes the typical damsel-in-distress figure of popular fairy tales, writing, This castle is a veritable prison, an d I am a prisoner! (Stoker 25). Later, when he chances upon a room containing three beautiful female vampires, they become the sexual predators, and Harker the prey, inverting the usual schema of the aggressive male and the resistant female. Even when he escapes the castle, the psychological wounds incurred by his experiences there leave him sickly and bedridden, having fallen into the traditional, stereotypical role of the weak-bodied woman. Mina writes, All the resolution has gone out of his dear eyes, and that quiet dignity which I told you was in his face has vanished (100). As he spends months outside of the castle, however, his illness subsides and his masculinity returns, reaffirming Draculas influence as the cause of this subversion of traditional gender roles.The Count himself, with his quasi-homosexual longing for Harkers blood, represents one of the most feared degenerating agents of the fin de sià ¨cle. Showalter writes, The burgeoning homosexual subculture that had beg un to develop in England in the 1870s and early 1880s was both identified and outlawed (Showalter 14). In an age where the definitions of the respective sexes was in flux, the addition of a new category men who desired men could only exacerbate the already existing paranoia that traditional gender roles were not long for the world. Draculas homoerotic urges are demonstrated by Stoker in his nearly-orgasmic desire for his prisoners blood. When Harker cuts himself shaving, the Counts eyes blaze[d] with a sort of demoniac fury (Stoker 24). This word demoniac reflects the Victorian designation of homosexuality as sinful and unclean. Later, Dracula reacts with jealousy to the sexual advances on Harker of the three women. He says, How dare you touch him, any of you?. . .This man belongs to me!. . .I promise you that when I am done with him, you shall kiss him at your will (Stoker 37). The amalgamation of the sexual impulse and the vampires appetite for blood in these two scenes exhibi ts yet another manner in which Dracula perverts the natural, virtuous order of human society; not only are there homoerotic undertones to these highly sexual scenes, but also an aspect of sadism that cannot be reconciled with the Victorian sensibility.On the other hand, the protagonists, when not under Draculas influence, fall under the traditional gender roles perfectly. The conventional male role is made evident by the sense of chivalry and honor, as well as the definition of manhood, supported by the five men. After Lucy, Arthur Holmwoods betrothed, is infected with the vampire disease, she loses her natural life only to be come an undead creature, preying on the children of London. Professor Van Helsing knows that, in order to save her, the men must drive a stake through her corpses heart, and he chooses Holmwood to do so on the basis of his tremendous virility, which he had noted earlier in the novel: As [Van Helsing] took in his stalwart proportions and recognised the strong y oung manhood which seemed to emanate from him, his eyes gleamed. In order to convince Holmwood to follow through with the grisly act upon he beloved, Van Helsing declares, You are a man, and it is a man we want. . .you are more good than us, old or young, who toil much in the world of thought (Stoker 117-8). To be sure, a physically hardy man is needed for this act, which demands strength of body, but the way in which Van Helsing designates the physically hardy man the most good, most like a true man, speaks volumes about Stokers ideal of masculinity at the fin de sià ¨cle. Later, Quincey Morris echoes this definition of manhood, contrasted with the Victorian feminine ideal:Madam Mina. . .You are too precious to us to have such risk. . .We are men and able to bear; but you must be our star and our hope, and we shall act all the more free that you are not in the danger, such as we are. (Stoker 232-3)This corresponds to the typical male-female dynamic, where the men face the dangers of the external world, encouraged in doing so by the knowledge of their pristine, virtuous womenfolk safe at home.At least before her infection by Dracula, Mina willfully fits this role of the meek, innocent woman to a tee. Early in the novel, in a letter to her friend Lucy Westenra, she writes, When we are married I shall be able to be useful to Jonathan, and if I can stenograph well enough I can take down what he wants to say (Stoker 52). Here she proposes a similar male-female relationship as Quincey Morris does later in the novel; all quests of the external world are to be undertaken by the man, and the woman is to support him in those endeavors as best she can, without being too meddlesome. In her journal, later in the novel, Mina refers specifically to the New Woman ideal just beginning to blossom at the fin de sià ¨cle, but separates herself from it so as to show her affection for the demarcated gender roles of the past.I believe we should have shocked the New Woman with our appetites. Men are more tolerant, bless them!. . .Some of the New Women writers will some day start an idea that men and women should be allowed to see each other asleep before proposing or accepting. But I suppose the New Woman wont condescend in future to accept; she will do the proposing herself. And a nice job she will make of it, too! (Stoker 86-7)Mina describes the newly-burgeoning concept of womanhood with a playful tone, and while she does not condemn it, she seems to consider it fictional, as though it were a game of make-believe to be played by truly feminine women rather than a new social order in the making.Lucys story demonstrates Draculas blurring influence on these traditional Western gender roles, as well as the eventual repulsion of that influence by the forces of order. At the beginning of the novel, Lucy fits into the societal mold of the female: attractive to multiple men through her sweetness and physical beauty, but devoted only to one, Holmwood, considered by Van Helsing to be the most masculine. Showalter quotes Stoker, The most masculine man draws the most feminine woman, and vice versa (Showalter 8). Applying this scheme to his own novel, then, we see Stokers suggestion that, at the onset, Lucy is the most (traditionally) feminine woman. Upon her infection at the hands of Dracula, however, Lucys femininity rapidly wanes as she gains the voracious appetite of the vampire, corresponding to the sexual appetite of the male. She attempts to seduce Holmwood: Oh my love, I am so glad you have come! Kiss me! (Stoker 154), but Van Helsing stops him from fulfilling her desire; at this point, the virtuous Lucy returns for the last time, thanking the professor, My true friend, and his! Oh, guard him, and give me peace! (Stoker 155). Here the traditionally feminine part of Lucy recognizes the burgeoning sexuality and vampirism within her, as well as the danger she poses to her fiancà © and the social order he represents. Just then, she dies, and the undead vampire within her assumes command over her body and her virtuous disposition.In order to restore traditional gender roles in this individual case, the protagonists are forced to drive a stake through Lucys corpses heart, thereby vanquishing her sexual, vampiric component and leaving only the original innocent one. To do so, Holmwood must once again resist her attempted seductions. She implores, Come to me, Arthur. Leave these others and come to me. My arms are hungry for you. Come, and we can rest together. Come, my husband, come! (Stoker 204-5). Again, the fiancà © is entranced, and only avoids succumbing to temptation through the interference of Van Helsing. When they finally succeed in expelling the vampire virus from Lucys dead body, she becomes again the figure of pure womanhood:There, in the coffin lay no longer the foul Thing that we had so dreaded and grown to hate that the work of her destruction was yielded as a privilege to the one best entitled to it, but L ucy as we had seen her in her life, with her face of unequalled sweetness and purity. (Stoker 208)Quite literally, by destroying the vampires influence on Lucy, our heroes have restored her to compliance with the traditional ideals of gender and sexuality. In this way, the particular case of Lucy Westenra serves as a microcosm for a larger theme in the novel; the protagonists will now seek to destroy Dracula in order to remove his sole remaining success in England Minas infection thereby banishing the evil blurring force from British society.Though this basic order-seeking, good protagonists / blurring, evil Dracula scheme demonstrates that Stoker supports a general continuation of traditional social roles, he does not go so far as to reject entirely the new order; the character of Professor Abraham Van Helsing embodies his compromising solution to the dilemmas facing Victorian society at the fin de sià ¨cle. From Amsterdam, Van Helsing is a foreigner to England like Dracula, yet the geography of this West-East spectrum speaks volumes of the meaning of the novel. The farthest west is England, with its fiercely scientific beliefs; in the far east side of Europe lies Transylvania, where superstition reigns. The Netherlands, then, represent a middle ground; Van Helsing practices medicine, but he also believes in the existence of supernatural beings like the nosferatu. Thus, it is only he who can mastermind the British defense against Dracula, for only he understands both extremes. He declares, I admit that at first I was sceptic. Were it not that through long years I have trained myself to keep an open mind, I could not have believed until such time as that fact thunder on my ear (Stoker 227). He leads the protagonists to believe in the veracity of vampires, allowing them then to attempt to end Draculas supernatural existence. Similarly, Van Helsing accepts the power of the Victorian womans autonomous mind, but does not attribute to her equality with men. Rega rding Mina, he says,She has a mans brain. . .We men are determined nay, are we not pledged? to destroy this monster, but it is no part for a woman. Even if she be not harmed, her heart may fail her in so much and so many horrors; and hereafter she may suffer both in waking, from her nerves, and in sleep, from her dreams. (Stoker 226)Whereas the other men talk only of Minas virtue and innocence, Van Helsing acknowledges her intelligence, again exhibiting a moderation between the extreme order of England and disorder of Transylvania. Yet even while doing so, Van Helsing still advocates the traditional view that external dangers should be, and can be, braved only by men. By designating such a man as the leader of the protagonists, Stoker seems to support an intermediate stance although obviously closer to traditional than to revolutionary in the fin de sià ¨cle crisis of social structure. Conservative though he may have been, then, Stoker did recognize the changing face of Victo rian society at the end of the 19th century, and did his best to develop a view that could be accepted by all factions. Shakespeare’s presentation of Macbeths as a tragic hero is emphasised by Shakespeare using Lady Macbeth’s speech to input language devices, such as a proverb: â€Å" like the poor cat i’th’adage? † This says the cat wanted a fish but would not get her paws wet, which is what Lady Macbeth compares Macbeth to; a man wanting to become king but not willing to do anything to get it. Shakespeare uses this in Lady Macbeth’s speech to show how manipulative she is because again she is teasing Macbeth by stating what he wants but that he is not willing to work for it. Shakespeare shows how manipulative Lady Macbeth can which will inevitably be how Macbeth is transformed into a villain. Shakespeare presents Macbeth as a transforming hero by the decisions he begins to make, which are becoming more necessary for him as he climbs the ladder of hierarchy; these decisions now influence his whole life, but they have already been decided for him by the Divine Order. Macbeth changes his mind at the point where Lady Macbeth has manipulated him so much that his mind is in turmoil. Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to kill Duncan by telling him everything will be fine and no one will find out what happened. Macbeth knows he wants to become king so he gives in to his ambition. An example of how Macbeth convinces himself that he is going to commit regicide is: â€Å"I am settled† This means that nothing will change his mind on whether or not to kill the King. It shows Macbeth’s transition has almost completely finished and he is now evil. At this point the suspicions of the Jacobean audience would be very strong because here Macbeth is agreeing to regicide, which is killing the king and against the Divine Order. The Divine Order says that kings are God’s messengers and a crime against a king is a crime against God. Macbeth agreeing to this decision now will cause him to be influenced to kill again in the future which he will not care about and it will result in him dealing with evil from now on as a result of the external influences and his over ambition. To show the transformation of Macbeth, Shakespeare uses soliloquy. The soliloquy in Act 1 Scene 7 shows Macbeth’s conflicting interests as he fights with his conscience to decide what the right thing to do is. Within the soliloquy Shakespeare uses metaphor: â€Å" upon this bank and shoal of time † This is figuratively saying Macbeth is a fish in the river of time where opportunities come and go so he may have another chance to become king. Shakespeare uses dramatic devices by showing a dagger to Macbeth pointing towards Duncan’s chamber. The dramatic device used is imagery because it allows us the audience to picture what is going on in Macbeth’s mind and the actual imagery occurs when Macbeth is seeing the silhouette of the dagger, but nothing is there creating the shadow. The quote â€Å"And on thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood It is the bloody business which informs thus to mine eyes † shows that Macbeth’s mind is in turmoil because the first part shows that he now sees blood on a figurative dagger, which is a dramatic device to show that the dagger is with blood on is what Macbeth will produce when he kills Duncan. The second part of the quote shows that Macbeth is thinking about the murder in a way that is evil; it means that the thoughts of murder are playing tricks with his eyes. This implies that Macbeth is just imagining the dagger and it was never there. Nevertheless, the dagger pointing towards Duncan’s room is part of fate and the Divine Order willing him to kill Duncan. At this point Macbeth’s mind is fighting with itself, but it is clear to see that Macbeth is biased towards the villain within him due to his ambition. From the evidence so far, Shakespeare has strongly shown Macbeth to be a villain because of the evil acts he has undertaken and by conferring with the supernatural and beings of evil. Shakespeare portrays Macbeth now a villain, who has completely transformed with no way back and his villainy is exhibited by the acts of murder Macbeth performs. First Macbeth commits regicide and then he hires murderers to kill Banquo. The act of regicide was brought upon from the mis-guided trust of Lady Macbeth as well as Macbeth’s own ambition to become king. This is where the Jacobean audience would start hating Macbeth because of committing a crime against God (Divine Order) also they would have wanted to execute him for being bewitched because of his ambition and his inability to say ‘Amen,’ this is shown: â€Å"But wherefore I could not say ‘Amen’ I had the need of blessing and ‘Amen’ got stuck in my throat. † This means that he has no longer got a good soul and in those times the inability to say ‘Amen’ was considered a sign of being bewitched. Shakespeare’s presentation of Macbeth further continues by Macbeth arranging Banquo’s murder. Macbeth becomes manipulative like Lady Macbeth, and starts contorting the minds of the murderers to think of Banquo as an enemy. This is shown in Act 3 Scene 1 Line 90-91: â€Å"Whose heavy hand hath bowed you to the grave / And beggared yours forever. † Here Macbeth influences the murderers to kill Banquo by saying that Banquo is the source of all their pain and he will be the reason that their children will be beggars. This is exploitive because the words will anger the murderers so much they will want to kill Banquo. Even though Macbeth is strongly shown to be a villain, there is evidence that he had regrets of what he did to Duncan; this is shown through the emotion and his thoughts and after he killed Duncan: â€Å"Had I but died an hour before this chance † This means if Macbeth had died before Lady Macbeth had spoke of her ploy or her ‘enterprise’ Duncan would still be alive and Macbeth would have been blessed and gone to heaven. This is another close reference to the belief in Christianity in the Jacobean period. Throughout this period of the play, Shakespeare depicts Macbeth as being a murderous villain by using a number of language devices. In the quote: â€Å"Whose heavy hand hath bowed † Shakespeare uses the alliteration of the letter ‘h’; this makes this part of the dialogue sound sinister and malevolent, in order to emphasise what Macbeth would do to the murderers if they did not carry out the murder. Another language device used by Shakespeare is a rhyming couplet: â€Å"It is concluded, Banquo, thy souls flight / If it finds heaven, must find it out tonight. † Shakespeare uses the rhyming couplet of ‘flight’ and ‘tonight’ in this sentence to make the audience remember what has happened, therefore these two lines are use as a two line summary for the scene. The rhyming couplet also adds extra emphasis on what Macbeth is feeling at the time; Banquo was once his friend so he hopes that his soul can go to heaven. The whole of the quote acts as a summary to the scene but also as a conclusion to Banquo’s life as Macbeths sees it. Shakespeare presents Macbeth as a man driven by ungodly ideas in a way that would captivate the audience. This is shown through Macbeth’s ambition to become king, after being awoken by the supernatural. Before the Jacobeans, there were the Elizabethans and they were heavily involved in the supernatural. The Elizabethan view of ambition was that it was a sin rather than a virtue, which is the contemporary view of the word; Elizabethans thought of ambition as an impatience against God, who had already decided what your destiny was, again referencing back to the Divine Order. Macbeth’s ambition would have made the audience even more assertive of the fact Macbeth was a villain because his ambition was such a dominant attribute that it now defines his character. Macbeth’s ambition is first disclosed after Macbeth’s first convergence with the witches where he says (Act 1 Scene 3): â€Å" less than horrible imaginings † Macbeth pictures himself as Duncan’s assassin, which means his ambition is already taking a little control in the back of his mind. At this point Macbeth is disgusted at what he is thinking because he does not yet realise what he will become in the future. The audience in the Jacobean times would have been disgusted with Macbeth for having ambition because of their unchallenged faith in Christianity and ambition being an impatience against God. The audience would have hated him at this point and seen him as a true villain; they would have forgotten about the hero he once was because it is no longer there. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony to illustrate this aspect of Macbeth’s transition because Macbeth is disgusted by himself at first when he meets the witches for thinking about becoming king, but he does not realise that what he is disgusted by is what he will inexorably become so accustomed to later on: killing the king and other people. Shakespeare uses this technique to show the contrast and transition of Macbeth’s character. Shakespeare’s presentation of a man who consults with evil spirits is shown whenever Macbeth talks to the witches, which he does twice during the play both. Macbeth’s shows assertiveness towards the witches, which shows how his character has changed from the first meeting with the witches. This is shown in the following quote, the first of which is from the first of the meetings and the second quote is from the second congregation: â€Å" With such prophetic greeting? Speak, I charge you. † This shows Macbeth commanding the witches as though they were peasants to obtain the information. â€Å"How now, you secret, black, and midnight hags! / What is’t you do? † This is the second meeting where Macbeth is supposedly greeting the witches. You can see from the quote that Macbeth feels that he can treat evil beings with such disrespect. The reasons Macbeth’s attitude changes toward the witches are: he believes what they say, he wants to be more powerful by knowing what happens before it actually does, he feels that now he is king no one can match so everyone must be lower in the hierarchy and also he is anxious and frightened because he wants to know he has misfortune that is to be told. Macbeth’s character has changed so much that he is now depicted by Shakespeare as a terribly villainous person. The fact that Macbeth consorting with the supernatural is solid evidence to show that Macbeth is a villain. Due to the evil acts committed by Macbeth, the audience would have once again would have wanted to execute Macbeth because he is dealing with the supernatural, which was profound upon by the Jacobeans particularly King James. King James had a personal supernatural experience where he was convinced that witches caused his boat with him and his wife to almost be shipwrecked. The response of the Jacobean audience is important to note because it shows that Shakespeare included topics of interest from the period that he composed the production. Shakespeare uses mainly language devices to show that Macbeth is in partnership with evil spirits. In Act 3 Scene 4 he uses a metaphor to show how much blood he has shed and how the witches can help: â€Å"I am in blood returning were as tedious as go’er† This literally says that Macbeth is so far in to a river of blood that he cannot return. The reference to a path where there is no return is reference to a number of times during the play as a symbol of guilt aimed at Macbeth by Shakespeare. This is referring to all the murders he has committed and how it is affecting him. However before this he says: â€Å"More they shall speak for mine own good† The word ‘they’ refers to the three witches and the quote says that Macbeth will be looking for a way to correct or make better what he has done. Macbeth has relied on the witches for his good fortune but he does not realise what it has done to his character and how it affects the views of others about him. The language techniques used by Shakespeare, back up the strong evidence that Macbeth is a villain. At this point Shakespeare presents Macbeth as a villain to the extent that there is no return for his heroic character due to the fact that his soul is now stained with the blood of many dead people. Shakespeare’s presentation of Macbeth being a man despised by others as well as himself is more evidence to show that Macbeth is a villain; this is strongly shown towards the end of the play where he prepares for battle and we can see what he thinks of himself as well as what his enemies think. Other characters such as Malcolm and Macduff despise Macbeth and refer to him as a tyrant and being generally evil. The views of Macbeth are shown first in Act 4 Scene 3: â€Å"This tyrant, whose sole name † This is a quote coming from Malcolm describing Macbeth as a tyrant, which shows how people’s opinion have changed of him. At the start of the play these two people were proud to fight with Macbeth, but now they are proud of themselves to be fighting against such an evil man. Another quote from this stage in the play to show the opinion of others is: â€Å"Devilish Macbeth † This shows that Malcolm and Macduff both agree that Macbeth has committed evil acts regarded with the devil and hell, which are therefore evil. They both loathe Macbeth to the point where they want him dead. At this point the original question of Macbeth being a villain is answered by two important characters hating him. The evidence is now very strong and throughout the play it has been accumulated to show that he is thought of as being as evil as the devil. At the end of the play before Macbeth dies, he has aversions to the murders that he has committed in the past. This shows that in his disheartened state he has the will power to reminisce over what he has done; therefore almost disclosing the heroic character we saw at the start of the play. Even though he does not show it Macbeth would be discouraged that he has nothing left in life which is why he says: â€Å"Now life on Earth means nothing† This shows he has become very dismissive of life and does not care what happens to himself. Shakespeare inputs another character change here where we see the ruthless, ‘devilish’ Macbeth reduced to a quivering coward who is regretful of what he has done. The way Macbeth has lost everything in life and he now has the will power to reminisce over the acts of evil he has committed shows a little bit of the hero, but then we see how Macbeth can still fight for his own cause, which is evil, instead of doing the heroic thing and just giving up. This is the extent of Macbeth’s villainy; even when he has lost everything and has nothing to live for Macbeth can still fight for the wrong cause. During the Jacobean times the audience would have seen Macbeth the same way Malcolm and Macduff do; as a ‘hell-hound’ sent by the devil. This is because of their belief in Christianity and the Divine Order; the audience would think of the crimes Macbeth has committed against God and immediately condemned him to death. However, now in modern times we can recognise the hero in Macbeth returning, which we saw at the start of the play. This is shown by how Macbeth is remorseful and how he keeps on fighting even though he has nothing left to live for. In conclusion I believe that Macbeth is a villain, who was slowly transformed from the hero he was at the start. I assume that if Macbeth did not allow his ambition to get the better of him he could still have an opportunity to become king. In the end the villainous acts he undertook managed to get the better of him and many Jacobeans would agree that the act of regicide and murder can only be repaid by the murderer dying. I think that Shakespeare portrayed Macbeth in a way such as this to show the audience the transition of a hero to a villain and so that it would appeal to the Jacobean audience. Ultimately, the purpose of the play was to educate the Jacobeans of the consequences of going against the Divine Order and evidently God, which is what Macbeth did; he committed many crimes against God which therefore makes him a villain.
