The Great Gatsby Essay Example for Free
The Great Gatsby Essay Literature by definition may consist of texts based on factual information (journalistic or non-fiction), as well as on original imagination, such as polemical works as well as autobiography, and reflective essays as well as belles-lettres. The Great Gatsby has the following particular characteristics of a literary texts: The first literary element of the novel is the plot, the protagonist is Jay Gatsby, a young, wealthy man in love with a society girl from his past. He tries to build a life with her but fate and bad luck turn tragic. The next key element is the theme, Fitzgerald demonstrates many themes including the decline of the American dream. The American dream was originally about discovery, individualism, and the pursuit of happiness. In the 1920s depicted in the novel, however, easy money and relaxed social values have corrupted this dream, especially on the East Coast. A second important theme of the novel would be the hollowness of the upper class, the sociology of wealth, specifically, how the newly minted millionaires of the 1920s differ from and relate to the old aristocracy of the countryââ¬â¢s richest families. What the old aristocracy possesses in taste, however, it seems to lack in heart, as the East Eggers prove themselves careless, inconsiderate bullies who are so used to moneyââ¬â¢s ability to ease their minds that they never worry about hurting others. The presence of characters is also a characteristic of the literary texts. In The Great Gatsby we have Jay Gatsby the main character an ambitious dreamer searching desperately to repeat the past in a different context. Nick Carraway a young graduate from Yale which aspires to be a writer who is irresistibly attracted by the lifestyle of richness, opulence and extravagance but ends up being a supporter and admirer of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s morals and values. Daisy Buchanan, Nickââ¬â¢s cousin and the object of the main characterââ¬â¢s affection a careless, beautiful society girl with warm, fascinating gestures. Tom Buchanan is Daisyââ¬â¢s husband and the son of and immensely wealthy and socially solid family, a man without morals who can and will do anything to get what he wants. Among the other characters of he book we can find Jordan Baker, Myrtle and George Wilson and Meyer Wolfsheim. The setting of the novel takes place right after The Great War in the 1920s mostly in East and West Egg but also in New York. The major conflict is the fact that Daisyââ¬â¢s refuses Gatsby despite the vast fortune he has collected for her because of his unclear past. The climax of the book the confrontation between Tom and Jay is in chapter 7 and takes place at the Plaza Hotel in New York. The narrative voice of the novel is Nick which tells the story in the first person because he is part of it too. The mood is largely dark, pessimistic, and vapid as set by the purposelessness and carelessness of the wealthy, the ongoing string of meaningless parties, the ugliness of the Valley of Ashes, and the tragic deaths of Gatsby and Myrtle. Only Nick Carraways honest and moral view of life breaks the sense of tragedy. Among the literary techniques use in the novel we can recognize the following: The presence of the direct and indirect characterization made by the narrator and deducted from the charactersââ¬â¢ gestures and attitudes, the dialogue, the foreshadowing technique is also present through the mysterious calls Gatsby receives. Most important all types of irony are present in the text, verbal irony is present in the conflicts between Tom and Gatsby, situational irony, when Daisy ends up killing Tomââ¬â¢s mistress by accidentally running over her with Jayââ¬â¢s car and dramatic irony, when George Wilson murders Gatsby because he assumes Gatsby was the wealthy man his wife, Myrle, was having an affair with. Considering all the above, The Great Gatsby by Scott F. Fitzgerald is a modernist novel based on the reality of the post war 1920s, inspired from the authorsââ¬â¢ life which satisfies all the requirements in order to be called a literary work.

An Investigation Into the Differences Between Retail and Investment Banks Essay Example for Free
An Investigation Into the Differences Between Retail and Investment Banks Essay Over the past decades, retail banks have remained the main commercial bank for consumers, rather than corporations or other banks. The investment bank has become more popular amongst individuals, corporations and governments which are interested in raising their profits. Retail banks and investment banks have different organizational structures and activities. So they have many differences, such as services, customers and profits. And this report aims to distinguish between the retail bank and the investment bank in order to identify their specific service areas. Firstly, the author will review some literature focusing on the definitions. Secondly, the author will illustrate the differences between them from their target activities and functions. Retail banks offer a range of services to individual customers and small businesses, rather than to large companies and other banks. These include: savings and transactional accounts, mortgages, personal loans, debit cards and credit cards. An investment bank is a bank which specializes in providing funds to corporate borrowers for startup or expansion and does not accept deposits but provides services to those who offer securities to investors, and to those investors themselves. It may also assist and support companies which are involved in mergers and acquisitions, and provides ancillary services such as market making, trading of derivatives, fixed income instruments, foreign exchange, commodities, and equity securities. From the definitions above, it clearly shows that the two types of bank provide substantially different services to customers. As a normal customer, I think the retail banks are better than the investment banks. And there are three advantages of the retail banks. Firstly, the retail banks have more branches than the investment banks. For example, Lloyds TSB Bank is a retail bank in the United Kingdom, and according to Lloyds TSB website, the bank has nearly 1,900 branches across the UK. This means that you can find the branches of TSB almost everywhere. So you can deal with some normal business easily, the branches of retail banks can be found almost everywhere. For example, you want to make emergency loans, you do not have enough time to find an investment bank to make loans, so you must choose the retail banks. Moreover, the retail banks can supply some services which the investment banks do not provide. When you want to transfer from one account to another account, you can not go to the investment banks, because the investment banks do not offer this kind of service. Therefore, if you want to deal with some normal business (such as savings, mortgages and credit cards) at a bank, it would be better to choose the retail banks. The Royal Bank of Scotland is one of the retail banking is part of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, and together with NatWest and Ulster Bank, provides branch banking facilities throughout the UK. And it can provide almost every service that the retail banks have. So it has a good reputation in Scotland. Finally, the risk of retail banks is relatively lower than the investment banks. You can get money from the rate of interest which can be higher than the other banks. Such as Barclays Corporate which belongs to the Barclays Group and provide these kinds of services (such as savings, transactional accounts, mortgages, debit cards, credit cards). It offers a service called monthly savings which is its regular savings plan that allows you to save regularly over 12 months, and you can get higher interest rates are paid where no withdrawals have been made in the previous month. This means that you can get high fixed interest of up to 3. 25% AER / 3. 20% in months when no withdrawals are made. And the revenue of the retail banks is stability and fixed. So you do not need to pay more attention to the asset in the retail banks. These advantages of the retail banks are the reasons why the retail banks are better as a normal customer. As an advanced person or a company, I think the investment banks are better. There are also many advantages of the investment banks which usually provide services for the company. First of all, most of the investment banks are global company and it can provide services more widely than the retail banks. Such as Morgan Stanley is a leading global financial services firm providing a wide range of investment banking, securities, investment management and wealth management It reports US$779 billion as assets under its management. Its headquarter located in Midtown Manhattan , New York City. It has companies in 37 countries with over 1,200 offices, employees dedicated to local businesses, government agencies, institutions and individuals. So the investment banks can provide the services (such as trading of derivatives, fixed income instruments, foreign exchange and commodities) all over the world. Secondly, the revenue of the investment banks significantly more than profit of other types of banks. If you save your extra money in the retail banks, you can only get the interest from the rates. But if you sand your money to the investment banks you can get remarkable returns although it has a high risk. For example the Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. is an American investment bank and securities. And it provides mergers and acquisitions advice, underwriting services, asset management, and prime brokerage to its clients, which include corporations, governments and individuals. Amazingly, the company in US profits reached a record $ 13. 39 billion in 2010, on average common shareholders equity rate of return is 22. 5%. At last, the investment banks also can provide some special services that the retail banks do not offer. For instance, it can supply a particularly serving called ââ¬Å"financial adviceâ⬠what can make financial of a company more reasonability and determine the future line of development. UBS AG is a diversified global financial services company, with its main headquarters in Basel and Zurich, Switzerland and UBS is present in all major financial centers worldwide. With Premier Advisory Services, UBS offers you the opportunity to schedule individual one-on-one consultations with CEFS experts who understand your equity-linked compensation as an integrative part of your total wealth management, know about the different plan vehicles and can support you on issues such as How can I best align my equity-linked compensation with my total wealth management or When should I exercise, which strategy is the best.

Women in Business and Emloyment
Women in Business and Emloyment Presentation Women are turning into an unmistakable segment of the workforce. Women now make up 43 percent of the administrative, managerial, and official positions in the U.S. This may sound amazing, however tragically, a large portion of those occupations are just in lower level administration. Femalesà make up just three to seven percent of senior administration (VP and higher). There is still an incredible imbalance in corporate America. Antiquated perspectives are the primary concern keeping Women down. Numerous things originate from those antiquated perspectives including seeing Women as substandard, inappropriate behavior, and esteemed gentlemen issue. Women are battling these issues, be that as it may, and are increasing effective positions accordingly. This report will cover Women in administrative and official positions, what is keeping Women down, Women helping Women succeed, and Women who have become showbiz royalty.à In the past, females were just permitted to remain at home and deal with the children. It is not up to this point Women were permitted to enter the workforce, and considerably more as of late that they were permitted the opportunity to increase administrative or official positions. Albeit as indicated by U.S branch of Labor, Bureau of Statistics Women make up 43 percent of the administrative, managerial, and official positions in the U.S. The greater part of that rate, in any case, is comprised of lower level administration. Just three to five percent of official positions have a place with Women. That implies that 95 to 97 percent of every single senior supervisor (VP and higher) are men. For the most part white men to be exact. The numbers are even lower when you get the chance to significantly greater organizations. A 1990 investigation of the top Fortune 500 organizations by Mary Ann Von Glinow of the University of Southern California, demonstrated that Women were just 2.6% of th e corporate officers (the bad habit presidential level up) of those organizations. That is what is known as the unattainable rank. Women have an imperceptible obstruction that endeavors to keep them from ascending to an official level. Considerably more unfortunately, a great number of the official Women are there on the grounds that they began the organization, and substantially more since it is a lady claimed organization. There is still an esteemed gentleman state of mind that wins at the larger amounts of business. It is a state of mind that is far reaching in corporate America, which is that white folks are the best possibility for abnormal state occupations. There are numerous keen Women who are ignored, come up short on, and pushed aside for white men with less qualifications. Women get came up short on even at the official level, a May 1987 report by Nations Business demonstrated that Women at the bad habit presidential levels or more acquire 42 percent not as much as their male associates. That is a tremendous contrast in pay. An illustration could be that if a female made $300,000 a year, a male partne r doing the very same employment would make about $450,000. Women on Corporate Boards Corporate sheets are tragically comparable in their numbers. Just 4.5 percent of the Fortune 500 modern directorships are held by Women. On Fortune Service 500 organizations, just 5.6 percent of corporate executives are Women. Women are gaining more ground in this field than in the official officer field, be that as it may. Albeit not very many organizations have Women as a board executive, a recent report by the Glass Ceiling Commission demonstrates that 60 percent of Fortune 500 organizations had Women on their board. Women Owned Companies Many Women are beginning their own organizations. These arent infant organizations either. Extensive economy-shaking organizations such are E-cove are established by Women. This is one of the greatest figures changing the way Women are seen in the workforce. By and large, Women claimed organizations employ a significantly more proportionate number of Women and minorities than do their male partners (see figure 1). While Women tend to contract half guys and half females, men tend to procure just a third Women and the rest men. Men by and large lean toward a two to one proportion of men to Women. As mens organizations go up in esteem, they employ a littler and littler rate of Women. Figure 1] Whats Holding Women Back Old Fashioned Views against Women the primary things keeping Women down are out-dated perspectives about Women. Women have generally been maids and moms, remaining at home and taking requests from men. Women are raised to be small, easygoing, and never forceful. They are i nstructed not to raise their voices, be too immediate, too forward, or contend. They are particularly instructed not to act along these lines around guys. This thought remains imbued in the U.S. culture and makes it extremely hard to battle segregation. The court frameworks are still permitted to consider how a lady dresses in sexual separation cases, saying that on the off chance that they dress or act absolutely they are asking for licentious remarks and the culpable male was not out of line. With laws like that, it is no big surprise it is so difficult for Women to get equivalent treatment. Esteemed gentlemen This all ties into esteemed gentlemen thought that keeps Women down. Esteemed gentlemen are contained white male administrators who need to keep upper official America made up of just white guys. They consider Women who are solid to be feminazis or bitches. A solid man, then again, is thought to be resolved, persevering, and incredible upper administration material. These me n need to advance different guys which they have buddied up inside after-work exercises which Women are frequently prohibited from. Women officials are much of the time avoided from social exercises and frequently depict the clubbiness among the men that exists at the top. The corporate official suites are a definitive young mens clubs. Even on a more formal level, Women report there are certain sorts of gatherings they dont get welcomed to in light of the fact that they are not seen as approach creators. When looking at men and Women at a similar level, men by and large oversee more individuals, have more noteworthy flexibility to contract and fire individuals, and have more straightforward control over the organizations advantages. At the point when avoided from gatherings and not given as much power, it is much simpler to not recognize the ability and knowledge of these Women. Obviously, it as of now had been ignored or they would not be dealt with like that in any case. Women, Their Families, and the Real Problem Another view that keeps Women down is once they have youngsters they will turn out to be less dep endable and less committed to the organization. This thought is not valid and is yet another jerk see forced by men. In a Wall Street Journal/Gallup overview, Women administrators were requested that what they consider be the most genuine obstruction in their business professions. Just three percent said family duties, yet half named reasons identified with their sexual orientation, including male pettiness, dispositions toward a female supervisor, moderate headway for Women, and the basic truth of being a lady. In a review by Korn/Ferry International, official Women were made a request to name the best obstruction they needed to overcome to make progress; the most continuous reaction was basically being a lady (40 percent). More than 80 percent of the official Women in the Wall Street Journal/Gallup contemplate said they accept there are detriments to being a lady in the business world. They say that men dont consider them important. In a similar overview, 61 percent of the Women administrators revealed having been mixed up for a secretary at a conference and 25 percent said they had been disappoi nted on their way up the professional bureaucracy by male states of mind toward Women. Women Careers Women still have many generalizations to manage. They have employments that they are gathered to be in, for example, secretaries, medical attendants, and authoritative support. Ninety-nine percent of secretaries are Women, 93 percent of medical caretakers are Women, and 82 percent of regulatory/administrative bolster laborers are Women. Women are likewise the dominant part of material specialists (91 percent) and servants (82 percent). Women make up a greater part of these positions, however the quantities of official positions remain low. Women are likewise still paid not as much as men for a similar work. Full-time utilized Women still win impressively not as much as men. The normal man with a secondary school training working all day wins more than the normal lady all day laborer with a professional education. One reason Women experience serious difficulties to the top is the kind of occupations they are urged to go into. They are packed in regions that are generally staff and bol ster occupations, which dont have much chance to ascend to the top. Women are frequently excluded in the standard line employments. Notwithstanding when they get sufficiently fortunate to land a line position (which is the most well-known course to make it to a high official position) they are frequently the line employments which dont stamp them as pioneers or as profitable individuals from the organization. The most elevated positioning Women in many businesses are in non-working territories, for example, faculty, advertising, or, periodically, fund claims to fame that rarely prompt to the most intense top-administration positions. As specified some time recently, Women are significantly more liable to enlist an equivalent number of guys to females. Women business officials additionally overwhelmingly bolster womens activist positions. Women officials are giving a great deal of support to Women in lower positions. They are attempting to measure up to out the playing field. Sixty-three percent of the Women officials in the Korn/Ferry review trust that obstructions to Women have not fallen at the senior administration level, and 70 percent trust that Women dont get equivalent pay for tantamount occupations. In a Wall Street Journal/Gallup survey, more than four out of five Women administrators say there are weaknesses to being female in the business world. It is still an extremely out of line climate for Women. Women in high places, in any case, are attempting to roll out this improvement

Lipoplasty (liposuction) :: Medical Weight Loss
Lipoplasty (liposuction) In todayââ¬â¢s society you would think it was becoming a crime to be large or overweight, it is not so much of being overweight it is the way society makes people feel about weight. The world today programs us to believe we should and always be thin and our body to look a certain way. Women more so than men want to portray this certain look, by surgery with lipo or other cosmetic surgery. Anymore it is very typical as going out to eat as having these type of procedures done. For most including myself I would have to give this a considerable amount of thought cause this is a scary thing surgery, but yet so many are willing to try. As to say 30 or 40 years ago something like this was unheard of, now it is very common. With the advanced technology we have in the world today all of these procedures seem for the most part safe but like anything else there are always gonna be risks involved. The American society of plastic surgeons was established in 1931,and They do so many different Cosmetic procedures only to name a few breast augmentation, breast lift, browlift, camouflage cosmetics, chemical peel, ear surgery, face lifts, facial implants, spider veins, tummy tuck, and they are so many more. You can virtually get anything on your body fixed. They are some things you need to think about before determining if liposuction is for you, is this really worth all the risks involved. Liposuction is the removing of fat pockets or rolls I call them, they normally stay right with you even if you are dieting, But exercising can do a lot of toning , but exercise can only do so much. There are so many other risks involved especially greater in people with ongoing medical problems. Such as heart disease any kind of respiration problems only to name a few. In preparing for the surgery you will have several blood tests run and also a complete physical. Surgery will be done at either the doctorââ¬â¢s office or hospital depending on the individual person. In choosing an anesthesia they are several different ones to choose from depending on you and the doctor would decide which is best for you. For the length of surgery it would depend on the area or how much lipo is being done would be how long the surgery would take.

Democrats and Republicans View Points Essays -- Politics
Since the beginning of their inception the Republican and Democrats have had a great divide on their perceptions of what is best for this great nation of ours. Republicans and democrats are distinct in several ways above all in their ideas, politics and world views. Republicans seem to be known as conventional or cautious and they seem to embrace economic equity beyond any other thing. Whereas a Democrat seems to be more open minded and they stand for government supported programs. The purpose of the paper is to analyze, compare and contrast the two parties positions on the issues of same sex marriage, race based affirmative action and illegal immigration. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia ââ¬Å"Affirmative action" means constructive periods reserved to rise the representation of women and minorities in areas of employment, education, and business from which they have been historically excluded. Fletcher (1996) stated ââ¬Å"Affirmative Action was spiraling unpleasant as Republicans in Congress and state legislatures across the country criticized the issueâ⬠. America gives the impression to be held up with fair-mindedness as equality which increases questions in the minds of many who are not acquainted with the unique purpose of Affirmative Action. This will always be an ongoing problem throughout history but has come a long ways from the early nineteen hundreds. Racial discrimination is noticed more in schools and in the workplace. Springer (2003) reported that the New York Times surveyed a few thousand respondents and found that eighty percent of black respondents believed in affirmative action. Republicans are said to have old-fashioned american main beliefs. They trust that people who are skilled for a profession should g... ... 4 (Dec , 2003), pp. 289-311 Published by: Springer Articles Stable URL: http:// www.jstor.org/stable/3657306 Margaret E. Humorous Wedding Roast â⬠The Groomââ¬â¢s Odd Behavior this Evening :: Wedding Toasts Roasts Speeches
Humorous Wedding Speech ââ¬â The Groomââ¬â¢s Odd Behavior this Evening Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen - My name is Ron and I am the best man. Now, you may have heard said that being a best man is like being asked to lead the troops into battle - it's a great honour, but nobody really wants to do it. Well, I only agreed on the condition that it wouldnââ¬â¢t interfere too greatly with my own enjoyment of the wedding day, in particular the free food and drink. But as it happens, Iââ¬â¢ve not been able to eat a thing all day - Iââ¬â¢ve more than made up for it on the drink front though. Apparently, my main duty is to give you all an introduction to the groom. This part of the best manââ¬â¢s speech is usually just an excuse to demolish the groomââ¬â¢s good character. Now Iââ¬â¢ve thought about this and donââ¬â¢t see any reason to break with tradition. But itââ¬â¢s actually not that easy because Larry is a nice fellow; he obeys all local ordinances, he pays his taxes and he keeps the city tidy - so there is not much I can embarrass him with. However, he does have a few quirks! And if you know Larry well you will already be familiar with them. But for those of you on Pamela's side who are just getting to know him - be on the look out for the following ââ¬Ëoddââ¬â¢ behavior this evening: 1. Jumping on peopleââ¬â¢s feet ââ¬â of course, Larry calls it dancing and if it is, heââ¬â¢s perfected the non-rhythm method. The head looks one way; the body another and the feet kick out. I can only liken it to a bad version of ââ¬ËRiverdanceââ¬â¢. 2. Frowning during photographs ââ¬â although I must admit he did raise a smile when his picture was taken outside the church this morning. Probably because this is the first wedding heââ¬â¢d been to where he could walk out without putting any money on the plate. 3. Sniffing wine - if you are in his company when he starts doing this be prepared for a discussion on the body, roundness, and smoothness of his tipple. When he starts saying things like ââ¬Ëmulti-layeredââ¬â¢ finishââ¬â¢ and lingering complexity, itââ¬â¢s time to make your get away. 4. Vanishing into thin air - there could be three reasons for this. Heââ¬â¢s snuck off to watch his beloved teamââ¬â¢s first home game of the season.

 Tablets versus Textbooks Essay
One in three adults own a tablet. As tablets are becoming more and more common a new debate has formed over whether K-12 school districts should switch from print textbooks to digital textbooks on tablets. The first benefit of digital textbooks is that students will have new information at their fingertips. The second benefit is that high level education prefers tablets. The negative about having a tablet is that many people donââ¬â¢t have wi-fi. As you can see, the benefits out-weigh the negatives by far and there really should be no debate. On a tablet e-textbooks can be updated instantly to get new editions or information. Schools will not have to constantly buy new copies, which few public schools buy due to the high prices of textbooks. Most public schools still have history books from when Bush was president. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said that, ââ¬Å"too many students are using books that are 7-10 years old with outdated material.â⬠Subjects are especially beneficiary to subjects that constantly change, such as Science and History. On e-textbooks new editions and new information can be constantly at your fingertips. High-level education officials prefer tablets over textbooks. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Federal Communications Commission chair Julius Genachowski said on February 1, 2012 that schools and publishers should ââ¬Å"switch to digital textbooks within five years to foster interactive education, save money on books, and ensure classrooms in the US use up-to-date content.â⬠The federal government, in collaboration with several tech organizations, released a seventy-page guide for schools called the ââ¬Å"Digital Textbook Playbook,â⬠a ââ¬Å"roadmap for educators to accelerate the transition to digital textbooks.â⬠Some say that using tablets is more expensive than using print textbooks. Putting tablets in K-12 schools involves buying the tablet and the textbooks, building new wi-fi structures, and training administrators how to use the technology. Costs for e-textbooks on IPad tablets are 552% higher than new print textbooks in an average high school. A prominent education marketing expert Lee Wilson, estimated the annual cost per student per year to be seventy-one dollars and fifty-five cents versus fourteen dollars and twenty-six cents for print textbooks. Although, this is true they are thinking of the now and not keeping in mind the later. Right now, yes that much money will be spent but in the long haul it will add up to save you money. Just in a year E-textbooks can save schools between two-hundred and fifty dollars and one thousand dollars per student per year. Also, tablet prices are dropping as the years go by, making them even more affordable. Tablets cost on average four-hundred and eighty-nine dollars in 2011, three hundred and eighty-six dollars in 2012, and are projected to cost two hundred and sixty-three dollars in 2015. In the end using tablets is less expensive than using textbooks. As times are changing itââ¬â¢s important that we roll with the times. Using tablets in school will help supply students with new information all the time and high level education prefers them. Some may have wrong interpretations of them being more expensive than textbooks but as you read, they are not.
